This ingenious tool simplifies the removal and replacement of typical telephone manhole covers while decreasing the strain on the user. To use, remove the hook from the handle by rotating the knurled sleeve. Insert the hook tip into one of the hook holes in the cover making certain to insert the hook deep enough to clear the rib on the underside of the cover. Set the foot of the tool on the ground about 12 in. (30cm) from the cover and place a foot on the handle to hold it in place. Taking a working position with knees slightly bent, unseat the cover by pulling on the handle. Re-position the foot of the tool away from the cover and continue to make additional pulls until the cover is clear from the frame. Replacing the cover can be done in a similar manner by moving it until the cover seats itself in the frame.
