MIDDLE MILE

GOAL

Connect middle-mile infrastructure to last-mile networks while promoting network resiliency through alternate network connection paths to prevent single points of failure.

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

Applicants must prioritize: middle mile infrastructure, connecting non-contiguous trust lands, offering wholesale broadband service at reasonable rates on a carrier-neutral basis

BEAD

GOAL

Expands internet access to rural areas ranking below others in access and supports planning efforts, including increased capacity in state broadband offices and outreach and coordination within communities.

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

25% matching requirement and Letter of Credit.

RECONNECT

GOAL

Priorities for Round 4 include assisting rural communities to recover economically from the COVID-19 pandemic, and ensuring all rural residents have equitable access and benefit from funded projects.

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

Funding can be used to cover construction costs, improving existing infrastructure, or acquiring existing facilities and equipment.

TRIBAL BROADBAND CONNECTIVTY

GOAL

Build broadband infrastructure and develop use and adoption programs that support tribal communities.

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

Tribes may partner with a non-tribal entity or sister tribe. Tribal partnerships must have a primary tribe or tribal government as the applicant. Projects will be prioritized according to their impact on tribal land.

ALTERNATIVE CONNECT AMERICA COST MODEL

GOAL

Provide voice and broadband service to rural high-cost areas. A-CAM is based on a cost model that takes into account forward looking economic costs of deploying a fiber network and provides monthly funding to rate-of-return carriers.

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

– No specific deployment technology required.
– ISPs must deploy service to 100% of eligible locations in their area.
– Specific commercial voice and broadband deployment requirements exist.

CONNECT AMERICA FUND

GOAL

Deploy and maintain voice and fiber broadband internet in high-cost rural areas and ensure usage and rates charged to subscribers are comparable to urban areas..

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

– Focus on providing funding to larger local price cap carriers (telephone companies).
– Fund available for new or existing network infrastructure or for performing network upgrades.

5G FOR RURAL AMERICA

GOAL

Bring 5G broadband to rural areas to increase economic opportunities from access to the digital economy. Special focus placed on 5G builds that support precision agriculture.

ELIGIBILITY HIGHLIGHTS

– Funds can be awarded to providers that can serve areas not serviced with subsidized 4G or 5G.
– Meet 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3Gpp) 5G standards
